Find a Way or Make a Way
This was the motto of my graduate school, -Clark- Atlanta University, where I studied business. I always liked the notion that there are two routes to progress: by identifying an established path and excelling, or by forging a brand-new way. Astute people do the former, while innovative folks choose the second tactic. Both are equally valid.
Both strategies, of course, require resilience, the ability to keep moving, even when obstacles and indifference seem stacked against you. My own life story demonstrates this time and time again.
What is resilience? Can we describe it more rigorously?
Resilience is defined by the American Psychological Association as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.”
While this is an adequate surface-level definition, the concept of resilience goes much deeper than that. Resilience is relevant to both personal growth and societal development.
On a personal level, it requires the individual to view setbacks as inevitable…
